Sandhill Cranes living east of the Mississippi River migrate to southeastern North America for the winter. Many of the cranes who nest in Wisconsin winter in Florida. Those who nest farther north in Canada, may not go as far south, but we are fortunate in Wisconsin to see them as they make their way on migration. They are the birds who are here very late in the season – possibly staying most of the winter if the weather is mild enough for them to find food and open water.
