domestic fowl, rooster, turkey

Last weekend we visited a friend who loves all things fowl. These are just two of his many domestic birds which include peafowl, exotic chickens, Guinea fowl and doves.
This Tom Turkey was raised with Bantam chickens. The result? He thinks he’s a chicken, of course! Fortunately the rooster is used to being propositioned by him and decided to just walk away – a wise decision helped avoid an uncomfortable situation.

But the turkey was definitely bummed! Maybe there’s another chicken around here somewhere…

These are the chickens who provide us with fresh, delicious, free-range, colorful eggs. They live just a mile or so from our place and when I picked up another 2 dozen the other day, they were out in the yard. I had my camera so decided to see if I could get a few pics. Little did I know that chickens love to be photographed! They came running toward me and I nearly had to back up to get them in focus.

Luckily I picked up the eggs the day before it started snowing here. I’m sure I won’t see the hens or this handsome rooster until next Spring.

They really are colorful – see?  Here’s a link to Henderson’s Handy Dandy Chicken Chart. It gives you all kinds of info about the breeds, their origins and the color of the eggs.
